A Guide to the CS&A Candidate Application
At Carney, Sandoe & Associates, we value getting to know each and every candidate with whom we work. That's why we ask prospective candidates to fill out an application that gives us a wealth of knowledge about their search, going beyond just your resume and including things such as geographic preferences, types of schools you're willing to consider, and more.
The application also helps us determine if we are a good fit for your job search. For example, while we work with hundreds of schools all over the world, there are some locations where we do have any client schools. If we don't think we will be a good resource for your job search, we will respond accordingly and honestly to your application.
If you’re beginning a job search and hoping to work with CS&A, here’s a guide to our application, including our explanation for various sections. Use this as a “cheat sheet” as you fill out the application, which we hope is a painless and purposeful process.

1. Creating an Account: In order to start the application, please provide your complete name and create a password. Your password must be 6-11 characters with no spaces.
2. Areas of Interest: It is important for us to know your ideal type of position. We have listed all areas of interest under general categories (Residential Life, Arts, English, etc.). Under each header, please select the position that is closest to what you are ideally hoping to teach or lead. We ask for your first three interests, however, you will have the ability to include other interests later in the application.
You can change these at any point in working with us (they're not set in stone) and you're not committing to only being shown jobs in these areas or subjects.
3. How Did You Hear About Us: This is an important part of the application as we like to know how you found out about CS&A. We recruit at several events and conferences, so please let us know if that’s how you heard about us. If you don’t see the correct source in our drop-down menu, please select “None of the Items Listed.”
4. Citizenship: At CS&A, we do work with candidates who are not American citizens; however, it is essential for us to know about your citizenship ahead of time. If you have or need a visa, please indicate that as well.
5. Please read our Terms and Conditions before continuing with the application.

After completing the initial page, you will be taken to the CS&A Application Portal where you will be asked to complete additional preferences. Feel free to go in order or skip around by clicking the different sections on the left-hand side. You will see a white check-mark once you have completed that section. See below for more information about each area. If you encounter any obstacles along the way, just call or email us. We are here to help!
1. Upload Resume: It is very beneficial for your future Placement Team to see your experience and education written up in the form of a resume. Although this is an optional part of the application, we highly recommend submitting one to aid in your application review. Moreover, having a resume readily on file expedites your search once you are accepted; we can begin to refer your file for open positions as soon as we have a resume and accompanying documents.
2. Higher and Secondary Education: It is very valuable for us to know which high school, college, and graduate programs you have attended so we can understand your connections to our client schools, your academic path, and any advanced degrees you have that may be attractive to prospective employers. You can add any higher education degrees you are currently pursuing as well. Academic honors such as GPA and honor societies are also helpful tidbits to add.
3. Work Experience: Please share all relevant and recent experience. Provide as much detail about the grade or age levels you worked with and positions you held. Adding any experience working with children, such as at a camp or volunteer tutoring, should be included. If you have accepted a position for the summer or a part-time job starting soon, feel free to add that, too.
4. Instructional Experience: We have provided a list of teaching styles and trainings where you can indicate your proficiency. This is completely optional but can be helpful to pass along to schools. For example, the international schools we work with prefer to hire candidates who are trained in IB/MYP/PYP.
5. Geographic Preferences: We know this section can seem lengthy, but we promise it is worth the time. Our schools are looking for candidates who want to live in their location. It may be easy to choose “Will Consider” for all regions, but if you have a preference for a certain region or state (or, conversely, if there’s a certain region you know you wouldn’t consider), please let us know. The additional comments box at the bottom of the page is a great place to explain more about your flexibility and ideal location.
6. School Preferences: Please go through each of these options and let us know your preference. It’s important for us to know if you would consider working in a boarding school, religious-affiliated community, single-sex school, etc.
7. Teaching/Administrative Interests: We work with a wide variety of candidates who have a vast range of interests. There are many choices in this section and most of them will not apply to you, but it will be important to identify those that do. First, review all the possible choices in the sections which apply to you as either a teacher or administrator—or both. You are allowed to choose up to 12 areas that interest you; however, keep in mind that you should only select areas that truly interest you. Please be thoughtful about which option you choose for your first choice, as this will determine which Placement Associate looks at your file first. If there is an area you do not see listed, feel free to include it in the extra part at the bottom of the page.
8. Name/Contact Information: Your team at CS&A—as well as the schools that are interested in learning more about your candidacy—will need to contact you by phone, Skype/Zoom/etc., or email throughout your search. Please be sure to provide the most up-to-date information (and make sure to update your contact info if you’re re-submitting your application after not working with us for several months or years). If you are in college, feel free to put your school’s address so we know where you are currently located.
9. Citizenship: Feel free to make any changes or edits.
10. Language Proficiency: This page is optional, unless you are applying to work as a language teacher.
11. Personal Information: All of this information is optional.
12. Athletics Experience and Interests: Most of the schools we work with value candidates who want to get involved outside of the classroom. Helping in the athletic department can be a great way to teach students important life skills while having fun yourself! Anything that needs to be explained further can be added to the text box. If you don’t feel comfortable getting involved in athletics, please check the box “I have no substantial athletics experience or interest.”
13. Extracurricular Activities: Independent schools love having a wide range of after-school activities for their students to explore. Do you have any special talents or passions? Check all sections that apply.
In the top right corner, you have the option to finish and submit your application later or to submit right away. Once you hit “Submit,” you will be sent to our Candidate Homepage. You will see your current status which explains that our team will review your application shortly and be in touch via email regarding your candidacy (note: be sure to check your spam folder!). Feel free to continue to work on your profile and add additional documents, however, this is not required.
Having technical issues? We suggest using a laptop or desktop and using Firefox as your browser. If you have any problems while completing this application, please email recruitment@carneysandoe.com.
Keep in mind that once you start working with us you can change these preferences at any time. Your Placement Team is there to discuss any updates with you along the way. We look forward to working closely with you during your job search!
